Don't make your customers fight to buy your products or services!
This past weekend I was trying to make an online purchase for some camping gear I had found on sale. I'd been researching for a long time, and had finally figured out exactly what I wanted; now that I'd made the decision, all that was left was to pull the trigger and place the order. And that was where the frustration started.
The experience proved so difficult that I ended up not buying the item I'd been shopping for. Once added to my cart, the price reverted back to the non-sale price, a significant difference. The "free shipping" that was advertised did not appear, and instead I had a sudden large shipping fee. And I was being charged a significant amount extra, because it was charging me the HST from the vendor's home province, which doesn't apply to me.
I've learned since, after emailing their support account, that their system is set up around coupons. To get the sale price, you have to input the coupon code written in tiny print at the bottom of the ad. Then for free shipping, there's a code for that as well. And sure, that's acceptable, it does mean they weren't being dishonest. But the experience was bad enough that I didn't want to buy from them anymore.
Is your business making life difficult for your customers? If your sales process is too difficult or inconvenient, a customer just won't want to bother. Or are your customers even able to make a purchase or place an order from your website? If your website doesn't provide any way for customers or clients to interact with you, or if it makes it too difficult for them, you're only getting a part of the benefit your website could provide. There could literally be customers out there who want to hand you money, and you haven't provided a way for them to do that, or you've made it difficult with a cumbersome purchase process.
